Parque Natural de los Calares del Mundo y de la Sima offers dramatic karst landscapes, rich biodiversity, and scenic hiking opportunities in the mountainous region of Albacete, Spain.
Parque Natural de los Calares del Mundo y de la Sima is a protected natural area located in the northeast of the province of Albacete within Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. Established in 1987, it encompasses a rugged mountainous terrain shaped largely by karst limestone formations, which include spectacular caves, sinkholes, and cliffs. The park is named after two iconic geological features: the 'Calars' – large karstic plateaus – and the 'Sima' referring to deep sinkholes and cave systems, including the impressive Sima de la Vega del Codorno. The park's highest summit is Pico Alto, reaching approximately 1,920 meters (6,300 feet), providing sweeping views of the surrounding Sierra del Segura and adjacent mountain ranges.
Ecologically, the park hosts diverse flora and fauna typical of Mediterranean montane environments. It supports forests of holm oak, Spanish fir, black pine, and juniper, along with endemic plants. Wildlife includes vulnerable species such as the Spanish ibex, wild boar, roe deer, and various birds of prey like the Egyptian vulture and golden eagle, making it a hotspot for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers.
Visitors enjoy numerous well-marked hiking trails that explore the dramatic landscapes, waterfalls such as the Cascada del Arroyo Frío, and the Blanco River Canyon. Caving and climbing are also popular due to the karst terrain, and the natural beauty is a draw for photographers and nature lovers. The park combines natural splendor with traditional rural mountain villages nearby, offering cultural experiences alongside outdoor recreation.
The park’s combination of geological wonders, biodiversity, and accessible trails makes it a coveted destination for hikers, nature photographers, and those seeking tranquility in the high mountain Mediterranean wilderness.
